Urologists in Pakistan started with being associated with the Nephrologists and there exists a Nephro-Urology Association. However this was not a natural association but simply a marriage of convenience which was waiting to fall apart. It was the leadership of Professor Farrakh Khan who had the far sight of forming the Pakistan Association of Urological Surgeons (PAUS) and for this in 1997 he brought together all the young and senior urologists of the country.

In August 1997, a small but convinced group of urologists gathered in the auditorium of Mayo Hospital, Lahore for 2 days of meeting and to launch their nascent association PAUS. Behind the scene, discussions and negotiations were necessary to have all stake holders on board. A working group was formed to get the constitution of PAUS ready and then to take the association to the next level.

In 1998 the first meeting of the newly formed PAUS association was held in Lahore.

Professor Farakh Khan as president, Professor Riaz Tasneem as secretary and Dr. Salman Waris as treasurer were elected as the first ever office bearers of the association. This was a term of 2 years. This meeting also was a landmark as it was attended by the then Prime Minister who donated a sum of Rs. 2 million as seed money for getting PAUS off the ground.

Year 2000 saw the first PAUS meeting at Lahore and was the beginning of much to come. In 2001 a meeting held in Karachi at Sindh Institute of Urological Transplantation (SIUT), Dr. Masood Sheikh was elected as President , Dr. Farhat Abbas as secretary and Dr. Zafar Zaidi as treasurer took charge of PAUS Central Office . The constitution was revised and chapters vitalized. It was decided to hold an annual meeting of PAUS.

In 2002 PAUS annual meeting was organized by Lahore Chapter and the term Urocon was adopted.

Urocon 2003 was held in Karachi and saw change of guard and Professor Fateh Khan Akhtar took over as president with Professor Sajjad Hussain as secretary and Professor Saleem Akhtar as treasurer for a period of 2 years.

Urocon 2005 was held yet again in Lahore and this time it was an International meeting with a sizable contingent of urologists from India. PAUS election was deferred. However Professor Adib ul Hasan Rizvi took over as President, Dr. Zafar Zaidi as secretary and Dr. Abdul Majid Rana as treasurer.

PAUS elections later were held during the SIUT meeting 2005 at Karachi, and saw a healthy competition to various posts. PAUS was revitalized and chapters’ activity was encouraged. PAUS now have 11 chapters and a new chapter in UK was also started.

Urocon 2006 was held at Islamabad and by now the scientific content of the meetings had improved significantly.

Urocon 2007 was held in Peshawar. Besides an excellent scientific program, an exciting social program it also held a closely fought election of PAUS office bearers. Professor Sajjad Hussain took over as President, Professor Riaz Tasneem as secretary and Dr. Muzammil Tahir as treasurer.

Urocon 2008 was held after a delay in Faisalabad.

Urocon 2009 was held in Lahore and saw another election with Professor Ahmed Fawad taking over as President, Dr. Hammad Ather as secretary and Dr. Aziz Abdullah as treasurer.

PAUS is now a vibrant organization with over 250 members spread all over Pakistan in 11 chapters and a UK chapter. It has resulted in bringing people with various backgrounds close to each other and remains a forum to exchange ideas and experiences. PAUS helps to augment the patchy training of urologists of the country and to unify them into an active scientific body.

Rawalpindi, commonly known as Pindi, is a city in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Rawalpindi is adjacent to Pakistan’s capital of Islamabad, and the two are jointly known as the “twin cities” on account of strong social and economic links between the cities. North west of Punjab includes Rawalpindi division (Rawalpindi, Attock, Jehlum and Chakwal), Azad Jammu and Kashmir region and Gilgit Baltistan. Geographically its majority land is located in the Pothohar region but surrounding districts come under Salt ranges (Dhani and Thal desert).  Jaulian inscribed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1980 is also situated in region of Taxilla. Margalla hills are the part of Himalaya foothills add beauty to the federal area extending upto the Galliat. River Indus, Jehlum and Sawan flow through it. Most of the land is Barani. Local crops are wheat, maize, Channa, and Ground nuts. Total population of this area is approx. 2.0 Million. Urban people usually work in Govt and private organizations rest rural are farmers. Usual trends are overseas employment and real estate business.

Major institutions providing healthcare facility to the patients are Rawalpindi Medical University and Allied Hospitals, Combined Military Hospital (Armed forces institute of Urology), Shifa International Hospitals, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Fouji Foundation Hospital along with few contributing organizational setups like (PAEC, KRL, NESCOM and Poly clinic in Islamabad) and DHQ Hospitals. Some small private units are also doing a good job. Most common urological disease burden in this region is not different from elsewhere like Stone disease, Lower tract symptoms, Uro cancers, congenital anomalies and female urology issues are same. Transplant centers are pioneers in the country as first Renal and first deceased donor renal transplant was performed in this region.

Pakistan Association of Urological Surgeons (PAUS) has been established to raise the Urological care in Pakistan. It came into being in 1997 in Lahore which took 2 to 3 years to establish and constitution was drafted.  Finally, it was decided that organization will be comprises of a central Body (Center) and many regional bodies (Chapters). Ordinary Membership will be open to such persons belonging to the medical profession who are holding academic qualifications of M.S/FCPS/FRCS/Diplomate American Board or equivalent major Diploma in Urology as assessed by PMDC; such membership shall be conferred and registered by a chapter.

PAUS (Rawalpindi/Islamabad Chapter) was established by the efforts of Urologists of twin cities. Total number of members were low initially but with passing time it has been increasing day by day and the toll now reached up to more than 100 in this chapter. Chapter managing committee was constituted in 2002 when first time, Prof Muhammad Afzal Farooqi was elected as a President along with Dr Aasem Masood Ch as General Secretary and Dr Amar ullah Butt as a Treasurer. Regular monthly meetings were organized. It was an established forum for the regional Urologists to at least meet once monthly discussing problems and solving their issues, conducting academic rounds and training sessions, preparing for exams and improving surgical skills. Elections were to be held every 2 years but after 4 years Prof Saeed Akhter became President in 2006. In May 2006, Urocon was held in Holiday Inn Hotel, Islamabad. His contribution as establishing Urology and Transplant program in Non Govt setup is remarkable.

Then in 2008, Prof Khursheed Anwar took the position of the President. As a Professor of Urology PIMS, a huge number of MS and FCPS post graduate trainees were among his residents now holding the positions of Professors and Specialists in almost every place of Pakistan and abroad. Cabinet changes in 2012 when Prof Muhammad Naeem became the President. Again, this chapter had a privileged to host Urocon in 2013 held in April 2013 at Marriot Islamabad. After 2 years Prof Mumtaz Ahmad as upholder of the chapter introduced minimally invasive urology in the region by organizing a series of international workshops and symposiums especially a joint meeting with Experts in stone disease (ESD) in 2016 and Stonecon 2017. Dr Sajid Mumtaz Qazi became the new President in 2019 and hosted a 21st Annual Urology meeting in Serena Islamabad in 2021. Recent chapter managing committee is comprising of Prof Khursheed Anwar as President, Dr Sharjeel Sarfraz Ahmed as General Secretary and Dr Wajeed Gul Bangash as Treasurer.
